As I promised, here's a Power Tip. But sorry, this one is for SERVERS only. Windows Server 2003, to be exact.
The story goes like this: You turned on your Server 2003. It booted well. It showed the MSGINA login screen. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, a dialog box popped up: Failed starting some services. Please see Event Viewer and go fuck yourself. (Or something to that effect).
So, you duly opened the Event Viewer... and lo and behold! you see red gremlins
parading in the Event Viewer. In my case there were several errors: FireDaemon errors, and MSDTC errors.
How did I fix them? Read more of the story after the jump ![]()

Fixing the FireDaemon Errors
FireDaemon is a program that's capable of turning almost any other program into a service, i.e., a program that runs in the background even though no one is logged in.
I had been using FireDaemon to transform Orbit Downloader and uTorrent into services, thus enabling them to run without anyone having to log in.
It had been a resounding success; my downloads took place all the time the Server was running, and I succeeded in leeching several tens of gigabytes of ... um, goodies stuff.
But for several days, FireDaemon has been giving me those gremlins.
No problem. The solution was very simple:
- Stop all 'pseudo-services' in FireDaemon
- Delete them 'pseudo-services'
- Reboot
After all, I no longer need to download for days on end now. And as I expected, the FireDaemon gremlins went away.
But there's still the MSDTC gremlins; and boy are they some doozy problems...
